Farewell SNMA April 15, 2009

Filed under: In SNMA — medobsession @ 4:47 pm

I spent the majority of last week in New Orleans at my last SNMA Conference as a medical student.  It was an amazing conference.  I hold a national leadership position in the organization and had to spend the majority of the conference in meetings.   Some of the conference highlights were the SNMA Commencement ceremony, where all graduating students got an SNMA stole and an NMA lapel pin, the Kaplan session where flashcards and books were distributed for all of the USMLE Steps, the President’s luncheon with speaker Vivian Penn, and of course the SNMA Board of Directors banquet with a great Mardi Gras/Masquerade Ball themed procession.  Not to mention, I ran into my premed advisor Dr. Carmichael and his assitant QuoVadis from Xavier.  It was neat to come “full circle” being back in New Orleans just 4 years after graduating college, knowing I am just months away from graduating medical school.

This conference was the prime example of the saying, “Work hard, play hard.”  I spent most days in meetings from 8:30 am until around 6 or 7pm.  Shortly thereafter, I had people over in my suite to socialize.  I then spent the remainder of the night out at the parties until 4 or 5 am.  Then back up again for an 8 o’clock meeting!  The parties were well attended and it was fun being back in my old stomping grounds.  One of the parties was in the nightclub that I went to the night I graduated from  college.  I’d have to say that I got only about 3-4 hours of sleep every night from Tues to Sun.  Talk about exhaustion.

Anyhow, as I said goodbye to many of the friends and colleagues that I have made over the past year, I found myself getting emotional.  I really have dedicated so much of my time to this organization.  Through this organization, I learned so much about what a true leader is.  I learned more about the needs of underserved patients, and those of minority pre-medical and medical students.  While I accomplished alot in my years in office, there still is so much work that needs to be done.  I received a few thoughtful gifts and toasts from those that worked closely with me over the last few years.  I even broke down into tears saying goodbye to those that really supported me.

The greatest part about the SNMA is the network that I have formed.  Word travels fast, and several people know where I will be going for residency next year.  I met quite a few other people that will be at that hospital for various other programs!  In addition, the medical school chapter at this program is a strong chapter. I really hope to get involved with them and their Regional Director to continue to stay involved with the organization throughout residency.  I know that I always enjoyed meeting residents through my SNMA events and hope to provide similar guidance and support now that I will be on the other side.

Although this is my last conference as a student, I don’t intend it to be my last involvement.  I hope that my new program will allow me to go and exhibit at the national conference, or at the very least, I could be a panelist at a chapter or regional event.  Don’t worry SNMA… this won’t be the last of me!

MedObsession on Twitter March 7, 2009

During the election I was pretty hooked to CNN for the political commentary.  The broadcasters used to always talk about Twitter.  They would post questions and then read the comments live on air.  I had forgotten about it until recently.  My intern has a crackberry like me and was on “TwitterBerry” one day.  He instructed me on the ins and outs of Twitter.  Basically, it’s like constant facebook status updates.  People can become “followers” of your page to stay up to date with your posts.  You can also reply to other posters’ updates as well.

My first reaction was that this seems way too invasive!  I heard that there was a celebrity “twittering” during the delivery of her baby.  So I immediately deactivated my personal twitter.  I decided that only my close friends and family need to know what I’m doing moment-to-moment, and they can get all the updates they need by calling and texting me.

However, I thought about my readers.  My blog has had increasing numbers of readers, with 4800 views alone last month!  I know that my time during Ob/Gyn residency will be limited, and thought this could be a good way to still stay in touch with my readers.  I created a Twitter page for my blog: http://twitter.com/MedObsession, this link is also post on my blog roll.  I’ve also subscribed to my own RSS Feed and displayed it in the right-hand panel under “twitter updates.”  For those of you that don’t have twitter you can read the updates on my own blog.  For those that do, you can click on each of the status updates and it’ll take you to the page to favorite it or to reply!

We’ll see how long I keep this up…

2 Year Blog Anniversary December 3, 2008

I can’t believe that another year of blogging has passed!  My blog has definitely grown over the year, as have I.  This post will be full of links to posts with the most hits over the past year, and to some of the ones that were important to me.  I first saw my monthly readership triple when I became syndicated in March 2008: I’m syndicated!.  My main topics included the transition from being a nervous third year medical student: Hmm…Excellent?, to a confident third year medical student earning honors in several rotations (Ambu Med, Psych, Medicine) and my proud moment of being selected for the medical honor society: Alpha Omega Alpha.  I also talked about my personal life and experiences with relationships: Long Distance Coming to an End, Valentine’s Day, Cooking for His Parents, and A Surprise Concert.  In addition, I polled the readers for opinions about things I don’t understand: Diamonds Are Forever, Right?, Insight into the Cheating Mind.  I even went on a game show, Deal or No Deal Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, which I now realize I never did a “Part 6″ post for.  I guess I owe you one.  My monthly readership then more than doubled again in July 2008 when I became a 4th year (MSIV, Finally) and started talking about applying for residency: Advice for Applying to Residency, ERAS Submission, MyERAS, taking boards: Step 2 Preparation, The Numbers, Step 2 and interviewing: Ob/Gyn Interviews.

Over my 2nd year here are some of the stats for those of you that are curious.  Check out the post from my 1st year: 1 Year of Blogging.  I put the total for each category with the amount from each year alone in parentheses to compare the years:

256 Posts (Year 2: 143, Year 1: 113)

470 Comments (Year 2: 325, Year 1: 145)

3144 Spam Comments (Year 2: 1983, Year 1: 1161)

21084 Visits/Page Views (Year 2: 17439, Year 1: 3645)

—-Best day ever: Year 2 – 376 (November 19, 2008); Year 1 – 85 (July 1, 2007)

—-Best month ever: Year 2 – 3316 (November 2008); Year 1 – 479 (June 2007)

To date, the top three pages are: “Ob/Gyn Interviews“, “About Me“, and “Step 1 Books & Advice“.

The top three posts are: “MyERAS“, “BRS vs Goljan Pathology“, and “Done with USMLE Step 2“.

As you can see I have quadrupled my annual readership, and my best month this year has 7 times more readers than my best month the prior year!  It is very exciting to have new readers and new people commenting on the posts as well.  I hope that you keep coming back to read!  Please pass on the link to your friends: www.medobsession.com.  That’s right, for those of you that may not have noticed, I bought my own domain!

Regional Conference Recap October 28, 2008

Filed under: In SNMA — medobsession @ 9:45 pm

I know that it’s been quite a while since I posted.  However, it’s with good reason considering I had a minor meltdown as things fell apart for the conference right before coming together.  The AV order was lost, the public transportation wasn’t running when we thought and had to arrange van shuttles, the breakfast order didn’t get made like the person told me it had, etc etc etc.  But this all didn’t matter once I arrived on Friday and opened the hospitality suite.  We had over 50 people come for food and beverages and pre-register.  Then a nice sized group of us headed out to the club.  Normally, we do nothing on Friday!

Then comes Saturday… once we get the doors unlocked and the tables into the right spots the day went flawless.  After my welcome the SNMA President Elect spoke to the crowd and then we had a Keynote Address by the former Governor… yes Governor of Oregon.  We were so honored to have him speak!  We ultimately had several successful workshops.  This year we had a record number of exhibitors (18) and posters for the research forum (9).  We added a new event… the closing reception, hosted by the NMA Region VI.  It was nice to get their perspective on mentorship, and for the faculty at OHSU to offer a helping hand.

Although I was disappointed with the turnout for community service on Sunday, the conference was a great success!  We had about 150 total, including over 100 premed students.  The region finally has a t-shirt to represent and wear at conference.  I’m so happy that I had such a great team planning this with me.  I could not have done this alone amidst sub-Is, submitting ERAS, and taking both Step 2 exams!  But I must say… I’m so glad it’s over… what a weight off my chest.  Now on to my first interview…

Conference for Medical and Premedical Students September 19, 2008

Filed under: In SNMA — medobsession @ 2:02 pm

As you may have gathered from my blog, I’m pretty heavily involved in the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). In fact, I’m heading off to Cleveland Clinic for the weekend for our quarterly Board of Directors Meeting/National Leadership Institute.

Anyhow, if you are a medical or premedical student on the west coast (or in the whole nation for that matter) and are concerned about getting into medical school, or the life as a resident, or about more information regarding health policy, then I have a great conference for you.  The SNMA Region I Conference, which is featuring the former Governor of Oregon, John Kitzhaber and several other dynamic speakers!  Check out the flyer below (click the picture to go to the conference website):

Leading the Region July 13, 2008

Filed under: In SNMA — medobsession @ 10:51 pm

I just got back from a phenomenal trip to Stanford!  This weekend was the annual regional meeting, which focuses on leadership development for the new chapter and regional officers.  We had one of the general surgeons speak to us and she did a great job of actually encorporating the theme (Leadership Genomics: Forging Forward on the Farm (Stanford’s nickname)) into her talk.  We also had a resident panel that included our Immediate Past Regional Director.  He was so impressed at how many people came to the meeting and how far the region has come.  I think what also made this meeting a success was including several leadership training and teambuilding exercises.  We used this “Whole Body Model” that was presented at the UC Diversity conference I went to 2 months ago.  They really loved that one.  It was also good leadership training for each of the officers to get up and talk about their goals for the year and their progress since elections in March.

I think one of the highlights was the board meeting on Sunday.  Everyone wore their new Region I Polo shirts and they looked great!  We had several people volunteer for the committees for the regional conference, approved our hotel contract, finalized the conference schedule, and approved the budget for the year.  The new board is very opinionated and we had some great discussions.  I think that things are heading in the right track and we are forging ahead.

Jet-Setting Part 2 June 30, 2008

Filed under: In SNMA, With Life — medobsession @ 2:31 pm

Flying this weekend made me realize that this is going to be a rough couple of months.  Before heading to the airport on Friday night, I checked in at United Airlines online and printed my boarding pass.  At that time my flight was on time and it looked like everything was on track.  Then I get to the airport and I had surprise #1.  I walk up to the lady at security with my boarding pass and my 1 piece of carry-on luggage.  Well apparently since I flew last in March they have decreased one of the dimensions of the carry-on by 5 inches!  My bag used to be the max you could have before they shrunk the size allowed, so the lady was NOT going to allow me to walk through despite my 5 minute attempt to convince her it would fit, since it fit just 3 months ago and I doubt they shrunk the overhead bin size.  So I stand in the very long line to check my luggage and start freaking out because it is already 9:15p and my flight is supposed to take off at 10:10p.  By the time I check my luggage it is 9:35p.  But surprise #2, as I input my confirmation number and the flight pops up on the screen, my flight is now not leaving until 12:45a!  Yes, a delay of 2.5 hours.  To make it even worse, I lost my ID last week, so all I had is the paper printout from DMV and a school ID.  Of course… that’s not sufficient so they print me the special boarding pass with the “SSSS” code, which means I will be getting searched.  I make it up through security and everything by 10:05.  I guess it’s good the flight was delayed cause that would have only given me 5 minutes to sprint to the gate!  By the time I did make it to the gate the flight was pushed back to 1:20a.  I was SOOO mad!  We finally left at 1:30am, 3.5 hours after the original flight time. Still pretty bitter about that, especially since my flight on the way home was 2.5 hours delayed.  Not looking forward to hopping on another plane in just 4 days.

On a good note.  The SNMA board of directors meeting was excellent.  We had some good speakers, including the local NMA president and the Dean of the Univ. of Maryland School of Medicine who happens to be and obstetrician/gynecologist.  We accomplished alot during the meetings and I think that this is going to be a very productive year.  And of course it wouldn’t be a good BOD without hitting the club!  There were so many of us there we ended up infiltrating the upstairs VIP section without even having to pay :-) .  Can’t wait til the next one in September.  Too bad it’s not close enough to drive!

Jet-Setting June 27, 2008

As I mentioned in the post below, I am going to be flying all over the place this year.  I am actually heading out of town tonight on a red-eye to Baltimore for the SNMA Board of Directors’ Meeting at the University of Maryland SOM.  Then I will be heading home the following weekend for the 4th of July.  And then… the following weekend I will be flying to Stanford University SOM for the Region I Annual Meeting on leadership development.  Right when I get back I will start by first Sub-I: Inpatient Gynecology.

Anyhow, I won’t be posting since I will be in meetings all day for the rest of the weekend!

SNMA in NYC March 24, 2008

Filed under: In SNMA — medobsession @ 6:45 pm

So I must first apologize for the lack of posting for the past week… but it was a wonderful week.  I spent Sunday going on a shopping spree (sponsored by my boyfriend) for my birthday.  Then Monday was my actual birthday and I went out for happy hour, with about 15 of my friends and classmates.  Then I was off to New York City for on a red-eye Tuesday night and didn’t get back here until midnight on Sunday!  Needless to say, it was a busy week.  I was in New York for the SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference.  This was by far the best time that I have had at conference.  I mean, I was able to see some college friends, spend time with my older sister, and explore the city on top of getting all kind of business done.

So, I believe I mentioned in an earlier post that I am a regional director for the SNMA.  This was my first time as a regional director at the conference.  It was definitely a different experience.  Since we met our minimum number of rooms to be booked, I got a free upgrade to a suite.  And… yes… my suite overlooked Times Square!  Literally every morning as I woke up and every night as I went to sleep, I would go and stare at the view.  So on top of this upgrade, I actually had to lead my region at the House of Delegates meeting.  All the chapters are looking to me to answer their questions about the things that we were voting on.  Plus, I hosted 2 regional meetings.  The meetings were so efficient and I am pleased to say we had multiple people running for each position so that every spot was filled!  I was so proud of my region.  They say they are inspired by my organizational skills, so that made me feel pretty good.

March 2008 028                   March 2008 032

The best part about it was just being able to have the suite as a place for my regional chapters to congregate after hours and have drinks, etc.  Except that last night… random ass dudes somehow thought it was appropriate not only to lay on my bed, but to lay there with SHOES on!  Yeah, I was pretty heated. But then… I took a look out of my window and saw this:

March 2008 054

The unofficial theme of the weekend was “Red Carpet Affair” and we definitely had our celebrity moments.  The first night at the club we were partying in VIP with Ace of Spades and Moet free flowing.  Then before our banquet I got to personally meet our keynote speaker: Isaiah Washington!  Yeah, I was pretty star struck at the moment.  Then our entrance to the ball was greeted with cheers and camera flashes as I walked down the red-carpet.  Afterwards, the SNMA Board of Directors took a moment to snap a pick with him (front row, 4th from the right).

March 2008 208

Overall, it was quite surreal.  Random people know my name and had great things to say.  In some ways it’s nice, but I can’t forget where I started.  Shoot I’m just a med student and we are all on the same page.  I did miss getting to spend all the time with my college friends that I would have liked.  It was like being pulled by the region to be hospitable to them, while also having my obligations to the national chair in the ball and toast, and tryin to kick it with friends.  Well I have one year left to improve!
