I Love Orders July 23, 2008

I really don’t know why, but one of my favorite things about being on the wards is getting to write orders.  It’s amazing… you write IV Fluids D51/2NS @ 125cc/hour and next thing you know the patient has fluids running.  Maybe it’s because I am the oldest and have been known to be a bit bossy over the years.  Perhaps it’s because I have been president of a few organizations and have become accustomed to delegating tasks.  The amazing thing about it all is that it is part of my job to write orders and nobody has a problem with it.  I’m not being referred to as a dictator because that’s what I am supposed to do and it is the role of the nurses to carry out the orders.  I love it because everyone on the medical team has a defined role.  There are less complaints because people know what they are getting into as the resident versus the attending versus the nurse versus the medical assistant versus the social worker… you get the point.  It’s also very fitting as a former secretary of organizations to follow up on the orders to ensure that the task is done.  I mean anyone who has ever been part of an organization realizes that someone has to make sure that the delegated tasks are completed.  I never really knew where all of these leadership roles would come in handy, but now I see!

P.S. I love writing orders as a fourth year because they don’t even check them! They trust what I have written and just sign.  Ahh… it’s so nice to not be a third year anymore :D .

Wait till you have to decide between giving a patient 0.5mg IV Dilaudid Q4hrs or 0.25mg IV Dilaudid Q2hrs.

But outside of narcotics and any other thing that makes me afraid I might kill someone, writing orders and having them carried out is great.
