Today was my first day actually on service as a sub-I! I was very excited about the day and really wanted to show them from the start that I am excited and serious about this for my career. Anyways, so I meet my team, which consists of the cheif resident, intern, 2 medical student, visiting Chinese doctor (who shadows the medical students), and me. Yeah… that’s alot of people! Then the cheif tells me that the 3rd year medical student will get to scrub today because he was there for the pre-op conference on Friday… What!? Do you know how many times I was booted for cases as a 3rd year cause we had a sub-I who got to hand pick what case they wanted to do. I was in shock. I guess her thoughts are that the 3rd year medical student may only get to experience Ob/Gyn during this 6 weeks, whereas I will have the rest of my life.
So once again I am there standing on the stool, hovering over the case, barely able to see! I was like what the heck… what happened to being a 4th year. I got over though when the attending told me that I would get to go to the same-day surgery unit to do a LEEP. I was so excited! We left to go do the case as the intern closed the first case. Then we get over there and the case was post-poned for an hour and a half. That was just enough time for the intern to come and do the LEEP
So once again being a 4th year meant nothing, because the intern has priority. I guess today reminded me that I am still just a medical student. I know it was only my first day, so we will see how it goes tomorrow… On a happy note, although I worked an 11.5 hour day it flew by so fast! I know that I am in the right place

Hey…. just wanted to tell you that I love your blog. You’re so positive and upbeat. I will start medical school in a couple of weeks, I came from an HBCU as well, will be going to a top 20 school, and I’m really excited about doing work with the SNMA and everything. The only thing that concerns me is that some students at the school told me their chapter is not very active…. which I disappoints me because I did a lot of work with MAPS in undergrad. Either way I will be looking to you for some pointers. Happy 4th yr!
Thanks! I hope that your first year goes well. And although your chapter is not that active, you can be there to revitalize the chapter. I have seen a few chapters in my region have very active MAPS members that became SNMA members and totally transformed the chapter! Let me know if I can offer any help.
